The city of eternal spring…

Twelve Months of Spring

Located in the Aburrá Valley in the lower altitudes of the Andes Mountains, Medellín is a pleasant buzzing center of economic and associated medical development that has thoroughly enjoyed the growth of the Colombian economy. Founded in 1616 by Francisco Herrera y Campuzano, Medellín quickly became a favored destination for Spanish settlers due to its enchanting spring-like climate and year round sunshine. It has now filled up most of the valley in which it is located, bringing the total regional population to almost 5 million people.

Paísa Hospitality

The people of Medellín and surrounding areas are known as “paisas,” derived from the word país, meaning country. Paisas are known for their beauty, which is exemplified by Colombia Moda, a world-renowned fashion and textile event in July. The city also hosts the Feria de Flores, a three week-long carnival celebrating the areas grandesque beauty with an exquisite orchid and varietals expositions and an extravagant flower parade, a prodigious ‘cabal gata de pasos finos’ (fine step horse parade) and a continual celebration of Latin American culture. Enjoy the non-stop daily events schedule or the ambiance of the Antioquian nights at some of Medellín’s fine restaurants, bars and dance clubs, all celebrating the paisa tradition.

Building on these events, as well as the esteemed reputation of the medical programs at the University of Antioquia, the economic fortitude of the University of EAFIT, the rapidly expanding business sector, and contemporary arts, music and fashion societies, Medellín is an up and coming metropolis that Medical Tourism Solutions is proud to offer as a health care tourism destination. We are confident you will fall in love with the charm and elegance of paisa hospitality.

The Museo National de Antioquia is an internationally renowned museum featuring the works of Ruperto Ferreira, Pedro Nel Gómez and Rodrigo Arenas Betancur. As well as Antioquia’s native son Fernando Botero and other acclaimed international artists. Outside the museum is Botero Plaza, filled with a dozen large-scale sculptures by the artist. While an ice cream in the plaza is great for those in a hurry, the museum is well worth the price of admission and the experience of Colombian culture.

Pueblito Paisa

More of a monument to the classical Antioquian town than a museum, this hilltop tourist locale is a nice afternoon’s visit. Stroll through a classic colonial plaza fronting the church and appreciate the wonderful window frames while you enjoy a local meal at the numerous cafes and restaurants surrounding the plaza. Make sure to take advantage of the view of the entire city from this gorgeous central vantage point.

Cultural Evolution, Contemporary Sophistication, and Tourism Security

While many people associate Medellín with the now deceased Pablo Escobar and the cartels from the 1980’s, the city has come a long way in the last 20 years, and Medical Tourism Solutions has selected Medellín as a Health tourism destination with complete confidence of safety. In fact, the homicide rate is now below that of Washington DC, Baltimore, Detroit, Atlanta, and St. Louis, and kidnappings of foreigners in a thing of the past.

Instead, the city is known for developing the first metro in South America, hosting an international poetry festival in June, the largest fashion and textile show in the country and the Flower Festival, a grand carnival of sensational arts and culture. Medellín is also the home of Fernando Botero, one of the most famous Latin American artists in history who blossomed with the colors and passion of Medellin’s innumerous flora varietals, and represents the culture and society that Medical Tourism Solutions has chosen to operate within.
