Leaving Behind a History of Violence
For many years, Colombia had a reputation of violence stemming from the time of Pablo Escobar. Since 2002 and the election of Alvaro Uribe to the presidency, things have been rapidly changing. Kidnapping is now below the rate found in Mexico, and the murder rate in Medellín and Bogotá is below that of such major U.S. cities as Atlanta and Detroit. A demobilization agreement has been signed with the right-wing paramilitaries, and numbers of the left wing guerillas have been reduced from over 30,000 to about 9,000. What do remain of these guerillas have almost no support from the public, and have been pushed far out into the jungle, well away from any metropolitan areas.
